You're going to need to top up your cars battery a lot more than you fill up the fuel tank of an ICE, At the moment of writing chargers are very limited .Just a little statistic for you, the latest figures are 1.8 million EV's and PHEVS on the road in the UK compared to 46,000 charging points. so the chances are if you find one it's likely to be occupied.
Currently a standard EV takes 12 hours to reach a full charge from 0% ( I said standard because there is certain manufacturers that offer fast charging in around 45 min). The thing with fast charging is I'm aware of only one manufacturer which currently supports 45 min charging this is a subscription based service and they are very strict on allowing the vehicles to use this. If you make any kind of modification to the car or buy one second hand then they remove this feature.
Using a fast charger continuously really does affect the overall life of the battery reducing it drastically, so is it worth using the fast chargers? probably not a good idea if you do a lot of long journeys, currently on average the range of an EV's battery is around 250 miles so good if you live close to work but not as an long distance cruiser you'll be stopping a lot to charge your car around 2-3 hours to get a decent charge.
Hope you like service stations
